In 2014, Matter was established as a juxtaposition of the two passions shared between Ruturaj Parikh and Maanasi Hattangadi - architecture and books. This lecture outlines some core principles / values with loose threads to work - a reflective, introspective discussion on the ideas and efforts that shape our practice today.

What is the purpose of building on the margins? What should it do for the people who occupy those margins? Should it merely concern itself with the tangible or is it capable of doing something more - like challenging spatial or social hegemony? The talk questions the act of building through stories of three communities who have been  marginalized socially, politically, ecologically and spatially.

Dinghaiqiao Mutual Aid Society was initiated by Chen Yun in 2014 in a historical working-class neighborhood in Northeast Shanghai, consisting of older generations of workers in the surrounding Cotton Textile Industry and new immigrant workers and small business dealers from surrounding provinces since the 1990s. The talks now look at examples of spatio-social engagements beyond our native context.

1st October / By Dharmendra Prasad
Friday

Fields are the drawing boards of life, making practices generational rather than disciplinary. When ephemerality occupies the central force in making process and toil, then it leads to reducing the hierarchy of materials. Ephemerality at the threshing floor will trace the observations, stories, situations and insertions in the fields forming the corpus of this talk.
