LONG QUESTIONS

A long question is a deep inquiry that one develops through close and sustained engagement with a subject. The notion of ‘long question’ emerges from the conceptualization of ‘longue durée’ that proposes to locate one’s practice in historical time so as to further, interrogate, deviate or engage with it in more stable and meaningful ways. Long durée practices do not give in to urgencies of the moment, rather fold them into the questions founded in one’s practice. For architects, this could mean developing an inquiry-based practice rather than being guided solely by one project to another. Such an approach may allow to create fresh avenues to recognize and respond to changing forces of production and living, and allow for agile frameworks and methods towards creating a transformative spatial practice.


As one of the longest programmes, architectural academia prepares us to deep dive into the design of our environments by introducing us to aspects/parameters of space, form and material on the one hand, while the mechanics of society, humans and habitation on the other. Academic engagements could help articulate questions that grow with us and allow us to formulate an attitude, a method, a disposition to converse with the world through one’s practice. Upon the brink of graduation, one ought to have questions for one’s architectural practice, that need not resolve quickly into amenable products, rather produce the drive to deepen one’s own questions while responding to the material world in creative as well as critical ways.


Can architectural practice be founded around long questions for intellectual sustenance along with economic sustenance? What inquiries have we formulated from our five-year architectural training and how do we seek orientations for them in our practice? In what ways can these be deployed? What preconditions are required in order to launch them; and therefore, what are the expectations (both, retrospectively and speculatively) that one must have with the academia as well as the practicing body at large? What could new architectural practices be modelled on? This symposium invites graduating students for sharing arguments and articulations for an individual or collective spatial practice. It hopes to harvest a field of inquiries through which the next architectural generation may produce a just and agile future.
